Raider Nation Raider Gridders Win 2nd CYO Championship
October 24, 2009
The St. Regis Raider football team captured their 2nd CYO City Championship with a thrilling 28-24 win over Walled Lake St. William at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. The game featured the two best teams in the CYO this season. It was the second time this season the team met. The first meeting was way back in August as the teams opened the 2009 season at Novi Catholic Central. The Raiders prevailed by a touchdown, but the Crusaders were driving into Raider territory when the game ended. No one knew then that the teams were on a collision course to the Championhsip game, but they were.
It seemed like Dejavu from earlier in the year, as the Raiders held off a furious 2nd half rally by the Crusaders to capture their 2nd CYO title in 4 consecutive appearances in the CYO Championship game. Everything was going the Raiders way early on in the game as they moved out to a comfortable 20- 0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. St. William was too good a football team to be denied and they scored a late touchdown to close out the first half 20-8.
In the second half, the Crusaders offense got in gear and they closed the gap, but the Red and White clad Raiders forced a turnover, and converted it into a touchdown. That turned out to be the key play in the game . St. William scored another quick touchdown with a minute to go in the game, and then tried an onside kick, but the Raiders recovered and closed the game out to seal the win. Both teams played at a very high level, and displayed outstanding sportsmanship throughout the contest. The Raiders ended the season with by winning the CYO "B" Division Championship and finishing a perfect 9-0, While the Crusaders finished the year as the CYO "A" Division Champions, and ended with a record of 7 and 2.

Built for Others: A mother never forgets things her kids say. .. Case in point was the discussion Cindy Heupel had with her son Josh when he was a boy growing up in South Dakota. She remembered her son telling her that he would be a great quarterback someday, but also that he was going to promise to do something big to help underprivileged kids someday soon. The Heupel’s were a big Catholic family that lived in Aberdeen, a very small town in South Dakota. Josh was quite a football player, and he was named South Dakota’s High School player of the year. He went on to play college ball at Weber State in Utah before eventually transferring to the University of Oklahoma. In 2001, the pre-season polls had the Sooners ranked #19 in the country. Josh Heupel was at the controls all season eventually guiding the Sooners to a #1 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Before the last regular season game against Texas Tech, Josh urged Sooner fans to bring food money to provide Thanksgiving Dinner for the needy in the area’s surrounding the Oklahoma campus. They fed beautiful Thanksgiving Dinners to over 250 families, and they were able to provide Christmas dinners and Christmas gifts to 14 elementary schools. He started a foundation to help needy kids called the 14 Foundation. The Sooners won the National Championship that season, was runner up for the Heisman Trophy. Josh had a brief stint in the NFL, and is currently the Quarterbacks coach for Oklahoma, where he Coaches current Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. He never mentions those honors to people, but his family is proud that he’s still delivering on the promise he made as a young man back in South Dakota.

Built for Others- “The battle-flag is always placed among the warriors, as a sign to which they look during the hardest fighting of the battle. We are continuously at war with the princes of darkness… if anyone is troubled, and overcome, let him look to the Lord vanquished and overcome, let him look to the Lord hanging on the gibbet of the cross…. And RISE UP!!!!” Saint Thomas of Villanova… Saint Thomas of Villanova was a priest and bishop born in Spain. He was noted for his works of charity and bringing solutions to the problems posed by poverty. He was also a noted orator who could inspire many. King Charles once commented on St. Thomas after hearing him speak… “This man can move even the stones!”

Thanks! To the St. Regis faculty and staff for the great fall sports rally at the Regis gym last week. The cheerleaders were fantastic and best of luck to Volleyball as they get ready for district play. Good luck also to the tennis and soccer teams from all in the Raider Nation!
Built for Others: One of the greatest coaches of all time, and in any sport, was John Wooden at UCLA. His sport was basketball, but as a boy, he played both football and basketball. Coach Wooden considered himself a teacher above all. He was a great strategist and knew the x’s and o’s of the game very well…But many of his players firmly believe what set him apart were the life lessons he was always teaching his players. People would wonder where he came up with some of the things he taught, and he would reply, “From the greatest coach and teacher I ever had, my dad”. Here’s a sample of what he would impart to his team… “Be a gentleman at all times. Never criticize, nag, or razz a teammate. Be a team player always. Never be selfish, jealous, envious or egotistical. Earn the right to be proud and confident. Never expect favors, alibi, or make excuses. Never lose faith or patience. Courtesy and politeness are a small price to pay for the good will and affection of others. Acquire peace of mind by becoming the best that you are capable of becoming.”

Myles Beckley #5- WDIV-TV, Channel 4, Detroit, was out at DCD for our game last week against St. Hugo… They are doing a piece on Myles and his family and our community that will air on Tuesday night at 11pm. Crank up the DVR recorders and adults… try to stay up late to see it! #5 is alive in us!
Many Thanks! To all of our parent volunteers last week for our first home weekend of games. Special kudos to the Damon, Delaney and Pierce families for their help with concessions, admissions and clean up. Thanks also to Col. Tom Lynch for the PA announcements at DCD!
Built for Others: The Raiders have many special Angels who watch over us constantly. Some are adults like, Sean Shoda, Pat and Peggy Higdon, Chris Mayone and Carl Hammaker to name just a few. Some are children, like Timmy Vachon, Myles Beckley #5, and one very special angel to the Raiders… Sophie Mankins. Sophie was born with a heart defect that made her short life on earth hard. She had many surgeries, and had to take lots of medicine and had to have oxygen around her all the time to help her breathe. In spite of all that, she was very much a person Built for Others. She was always kind and sweet and never complained about anything. She loved to laugh and loved her Mom and Dad, and sisters and older brother very deeply. But her brother Martin was closest to her age, and he was very special to her. She died way too young, but as Jesus taught us…. He makes all things new…. And there is no doubt that she is perfect now in heaven, and like all of our Angels, she looks out for all of us. Our Angels are always around us, and when we really need them, all we have to do is whisper their names in our hearts, and they will be there. (Tuesday, September 29th is the feast day of St. Michael, St. Raphael and St. Gabriel). “Angel of God my Guardian dear, for whom God’s love commits thee here, ever this day, be at my side, to like, to guard, to rule, to guide…. all for Thee sweet Jesus, all for Thee!”

Wash up/ Shower up- We are getting a few sick calls. Please make sure we are washing hands and showering after practice. No sharing of water bottles. Good nutrition and good night sleep can ward off the bug!
Keep DCD and Brother Rice- looking great! Pick up after ourselves and DO NOT PLAY ON FOOTBALL AND SOCCER EQUIPMENT!!!!
Please make sure you are picking your son up at the appropriate time. We had a report from Marian that a boy was left waiting for quite a long time (1hr and a half). IF you are going to be late. Call the coaches so we can wait or drive them home if need be. We try to stay until everyone is gone.
Built for others- Life for Max had changed dramatically. His body was racked by a lung disease called Tuberculosis. But his passion as a follower of Jesus Christ was unstoppable. It was 1939 and the Nazi Germans had attacked and occupied Max’s homeland of Poland. The monastery where he lived became a refugee camp for 3,000 Poles and 1,000 Jews. He and his fellow Priests and Brothers tended to the needs of the refugees by smuggling food to feed them and administering the sacraments and saying mass. In 1941, He four of his companions were taken away to Auschwitz, the infamous death camp. There he and others were forced into hard labor of lifting logs twice his size and weight and in double time. If they slowed up, they were kicked and lashed. They also had to move the tortured bodies and bury the dead. He was known in the camp as being compassionate to all and sympathizing with the other prisoners no matter what their faith. They were starving the prisoners, and all were in despair, but Max kept everyone’s spirits up, and told them not to lose hope and never give up the fight. “God is with us!”, he would say with vigor. One day, a German officer had four of Max’s friends picked out to suffer the penalty of death for trying to escape. Max knew one of the men. His name was Francis and he had a wife and children. “I am a Catholic Priest, I wish to die for that man”, he said pointing at Francis. “I am old, he is young, and He has a wife and children”. The officer made the changes and Max went to die with dignity with the others by praying with them, and telling them of Christ’s Passion. He died on August 14th, 1941 at age 47. In 1982, Pope John Paul II made Max a Saint, in front of a huge crowd in Rome. Francis was there to recount the story of how Max had given his life for him and for Jesus.

Official Results: Came in from the 4 way food drive. Over 8,000 items of food and over $1,000 in cash raised to buy more food. The organizers from St. Edith and the Michigan Youth Athletic Association called to thank us for our support. The big winner in all of this was St. Christine’s. They were overwhelmed by the support. Congrats to all of the fans, parents, players, coaches and communities of Shrine, St. Mike’s, Divine Child, and The Raider Nation. We will do it again next year.
Mass this week: All teams should be able to make it with the exception of the JV WHITE who has to be out to Novi by 9am.
Myles Beckley #5- We celebrated his birthday last week. That was one of the reasons for the ice cream truck on the field last week. We know he is around us. We already had a rainbow out on the field this year… he is revered and remembered by the Raiders always.
Built for Others: Faith…. It’s a tough concept to grasp sometimes… St. Augustine explained it this way: “The reason faith is so greatly rewarded is that it doesn’t see, and yet it believes. I mean, if it could see, what reward would there be? Now, however, people are told, “Believe,” and they want to see. The answer they’re given is, “In order to see eventually, for the time being... believe. Faith does the earning; sight is the reward. If you want to see before you believe, you are demanding to be paid before doing the job. What you want has its price. You want to see God; the price of such a tremendous good as that is faith. Do you want to arrive, and not want to walk? Sight is possession, faith is the way to it. If you shirk the hard work of the journey, how can you expect the joy of possession?”

Built for Others: Fear gripped the young man as he stepped up to the plate. He was still worried about being hit by the pitch, even though he had a flak vest to protect his 93 pound body. He was a varsity football player and baseball player for Freedom High in the Pittsburgh area and he was running out of time. He wanted one more shot, in a real game. The pitch came in, he swung and drilled a liner to right field for a clean single. He had to run to first base, which was nearly impossible because the cancer had spread from his liver and lungs to his pelvis. The worried about falling down as he hustles down the first baseline. When he gets to the base, he lets out a yell…”I did it! I did it!!!!” It was this kind of courage and determination that allowed 18 year old John Challis to live longer than the doctors told him. His simple faith and optimism allowed him to spread the good news not only to his community, but to the whole nation. The Steelers, the Pirates and the Penguins of the pro ranks were all inspired by him and his message. During last year’s baseball season, Joe Maddon, heard about John’s fight and was in tears listening to the story on ESPN Radio… Maddon, the Coach of the Tampa Bay Rays had John come down to speak to his team. There was not a dry eye in the clubhouse when John finished his message to the team. But Joe Madden wears a constant reminder under written on the underside of the bill of his baseball cap, and puts atop his teams lineup card every game…. The inscription: C+B= L… What it stands for is what John lived and wants all of us to carry in our hearts…. COURAGE + BELIEVE -= LIFE. “Life ain’t about how many breaths you take, it’s what you do with those breaths.” John Challis. ( John died last August, 2008)

Raider Freshman : The teams are split, and we continue to work on the schedule for both the Red and Black teams. Coach Everly will keep you posted.
Built for Others: He was Ohio State’s greatest coach… His name was Wayne Woodrow Hayes, everyone called him “Woody”, and he was as tough and demanding a coach as there ever was. His antics on the field and at practice could be described as harsh at times. But his players loved him dearly. Opposing coaches were not fond of him, but they respected him. He was such a fierce competitor, that he often slept in a room at Ohio Stadium because he would watch film of his players and upcoming opponents relentlessly. It would get so late, and his wife Anne worried about him driving so late and being so tired. He loved his family and spent time with them, but he was also famous for visiting area Hospitals away from the press and his team. He would call the hospitals nursing stations and ask… “Who hasn’t had any visitors?” and then he would go and spend meaningful time with these patients often sharing a meal or snack while they conversed. He was crazy about football, but he knew how fortunate he was, and his longtime rival, legendary Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler was the one who recounted his secret hospital visits after Coach Hayes passed away. It was a tradition Bo carried on, so did his successors like Gary Moeller and Lloyd Carr. There is a lot of history of being “Built for others” in the great game of football on every level.

4 Way Food Drive-A full cargo van of food was collected as well as a sizeable monetary donation. The food and cash was taken to St. Christine’s in Detroit to serve those in deep need. It was a great example of being built for others by the entire Raider Football family and our guests last Thursday at DCD.

Built for Others: Consider the missionary….They are men and women..Rare individuals who have already offered their lives up to God as religious priests or nuns. That vocation in itself is a testament of being a person who is unselfish. The job of Missionary gets substantially harder when one considers what the job description of a Missionary is. Usually, there are no set times for work. They are on the clock constantly helping those in need. They are often sent to places to care for the destitute, the unloved and the people thrown away by society. The people the missionaries serve are hungry, sick and poor. Not only do they dedicate their lives to serve these poorest of the poor, but they also work tirelessly to find medicine and food and water for these people. They sometimes come to well off countries to ask for help from those more fortunate. Missionaries don’t get paid much money at all. They serve knowing that they fulfill the example of Christ… These missionaries are humble people, they seek no fame, or glory, they are true heroes and the ultimate people who are Built for Others… This week, we will pray for their missions, and we will bring a box to the field on Thursday for players and parents to bring $1.00 and put it in. The money will be sent to the Missionaries of Charities. “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you did it to me, when I was hungry, you gave me food, when I was thirsty, you gave me drink,” The caveat is, the players have to use their own money or do something around their house to earn the $1.00. It may not seem like a lot of money, but it goes a long way for those in need.
